2011 Orem Japanese Beetle Treatment Set For April 11
Beetle eradication almost complete
Orem - A few dozen Central Orem residents will be receiving notices through the mail soon regarding this year's efforts to eradicate the Japanese beetle from their neighborhoods. The program that began in 2006 has successfully eliminated all but one beetle, and efforts are underway to reduce that number to zero. "Even one beetle is too many because of the potential for the population to multiply and harm our gardens and agriculture industry," says Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, Entomologist, Clint Burfitt.
Eco-life, a commercial lawn care company from Ephraim, will be spraying lawns and shrubs April 11th with the environmentally friendly insecticides (Acelypryn and Tempo SC Ultra) to get rid of the invasive pest. Residents in the treatment area will be receiving written advance notices and personal communication from team members to explain what precautions they should take during the spraying.
2011 Program Highlights
- Gardening is again permitted.
- No restrictions on the Orem Green Waste Disposal program for 2011.
- Approximately 63 acres of lawns, parking strips, open space, flower and shrub
bedding areas will again be targeted instead of the 46 acres treated in 2010.
- The products we are using this year are non-toxic and allows for gardens
- Professional lawn care experts will be applying the environmentally friendly
insecticide that is commonly used nearly every day by Utah lawn care
companies.
- 48-72 hour advance notice of when treatment begins will be given to residents
in the treatment area. This is to be done by door-to-door contact and/or
written notices left at residence when personal contact is not possible.
- Treatment will consist of ground application only.
- Our current success is a result of widespread citizen cooperation and their
recognition of the threat the beetle poses to residential lawns, shrubs, flowers,
and the state’s agriculture industry.
