to Begin June 13

Gardening to be allowed in treatment area

The 2008 Japanese beetle treatment program is scheduled to begin Friday, June 13, 2008 in a reduced area within the city of Orem. 

Because fewer beetles were found last year, the 2008 treatment zone has been reduced by 50 percent.  Orem residents in the treatment area will receive advance notice on when the lawns, shrubs and trees in their specific neighborhoods will be treated.  Treatment, using a common consumer-strength insecticide will again be applied by Truegreen Chemlawn beginning in the late evening hours at Orem Community Hospital, and schools within the treatment boundaries.  Treatment of residential areas is scheduled between, June 23 through July 3rd, moving from the southern treatment area to the north. 

"The start date for residents will not all be on the same day," said Plant Industry Director, Clair Allen.  "We will be treating from the south to the north, so residents can expect a visit any time between June 23rd and July 3rd," he added.

Notices with information pertaining to individual residents have been mailed to property owners in the 2008 treatment area.  Agriculture and Food Commissioner, Leonard Blackham is expressing appreciation to Orem residents in the treatment area for their high level of cooperation in the program. 

The approximate boundaries for the 2008 program area are as follows:

700 North, Orem Blvd., Center Street, 900 West; and a small area within 800 North, 890 West, 570 North, and 1200 West.
