Utah Centennial Rounds Up 100 Year Old Farms and Ranches

There is a place for your 100-year-old farm or ranch in the Century Farms & Ranches designation program.

This historic program continues beyond Utah's centennial year thanks to the work of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, the Utah Farm Bureau, the Utah State University Extension Service, the Utah State Fair Board and Brigham Young University.

The Utah Centennial Commission recognized and honored 433 family farms and ranches in 1996, and numerous others in 1997. All landowners received a special certificate and permanent "Century Farm & Ranch" sign for their property. Many of those operations have endured and contributed to Utah's heritage for more than 100 years!

Application for future century designation are now available from your county extension agent or the Utah Department of Agriculture. The application form requests information about your property's history and ownership. A modest fee to offset the cost of the historic marker will be charged.

First Farm Honored

The Utah Century Farms Committee honored the Ted Clifford Voorhees farm in Utah County as its first "Century Farm" during ceremonies in December, 1995.

The Voorhees farm has been continuously operated by members of the same family for 122 years, and is one of the oldest farm/ranch operations in Utah. The farm was homesteaded on March 17, 1873, by Christian Olsen (C.O.) Hansen in the area now known as Leland, located west of Spanish Fork. In 1888 John J. Hansen built a home on his section of the homestead. That home still stands.

The Century Farms/Ranch designation is one of the few centennial-based events that will continue beyond 1996. The committee will be honoring all 100-year-old family farms or ranches when they reach the century mark.

The farm/ranch recognition is intended to honor the accomplishments of Utah agriculture through the state's first 100 years. It is also an effort to help preserve farms for the future by reminding consumers of the food, fiber and open spaces provided by Utah agriculture.
